Well... The full form of A.A.I is - Airports Authority of India.
This was constituted by an act of Parliament and came into effect on 1st April, 1995. Well... This was the effective decision made by merging the erstwhile National Airport Authority and International Airports by Authority of India.
Details
This decision made the Organisation entrusted with the responsibility of creating, upgrading, maintaining and managing the civil aviation infrastructure on both ground and air within the country.
AAI manages a total of 37 airports which include 23 international airports (3 Civil Enclaves), 10 custom airports (4 civil enclaves) and 104 domestic airports (23 civil enclaves). AAI provides air navigation services over 2.8 million square nautical miles of air space. During the year 2018-19, AAI handled aircraft movement of 1309.54 Thousand [International 163.05& Domestic 1146.49], Passengers handled 158.79 Million [International 22.78& Domestic 136.01] and the cargo handled 944.90 thousand MT [International 487.36& Domestic 457.54]. Further, all Indian airports taken together have handled aircraft movement of 2605.96 Thousand [International 452.64& Domestic 2153.32], Passengers handled 344.70 Million [International 69.48 & Domestic 275.22] and the cargo handled 3561.90 thousand MT [International 2200.19& Domestic 1361.71].

The functions of AAI are as follows:
- Design, Development, Operation and Maintenance of international and domestic airports and civil enclaves.
- Control and Management of the Indian airspace extending beyond the territorial limits of the country, as accepted by ICAO.
- Construction, Modification and Management of passenger terminals.
- Development and Management of cargo terminals at international and domestic airports.
- Provision of passenger facilities and information system at the passenger terminals at airports.
- Expansion and strengthening of operation area, viz. Runways, Aprons, Taxiway etc.
- Provision of visual aids.
- Provision of Communication and Navigation aids, viz. ILS, DVOR, DME, Radar etc.
